The Incredible Impacts of Aquaponics
2023: Fast forward three years, the system has stabilized and is inviting many more creatures to the property. The system is so healthy that the turtles have laid two clutches of eggs, while the fish are multiplying. The bog garden produces enough watercress to be harvested weekly, and there’s also a noticeably reduced number of mosquitos in the area (likely due to fish and frogs feasting on the larvae). Any solids generated from the system are added to the composting pile.
Whereas we had to change the pond water bi-weekly before building the system, it now only requires two water changes per year. The water stays clear year-round while providing nutrients for the fish, the garden, and us.
Project Timeline
Sept, 2021 – Watercress
Watercress was choosen for its ability to tolerate shade and overwinter. It’s a fast-growing, nutritious superfood. Easy to forage (replace), delicious to eat, and only grows in clean water. Just by watching the growth of the plant, we can get an idea of the water quality.
June, 2021 – It’s a beauty!
Swirl filter is done! There are 3 pre & post filters, 2 bio filters, and 1 solids collector. They’ll help to provide nutrients, while boosting the oxygen level in the pond and clean toxics. Six types of plants were also introduced to the system to be tested.
May, 2021 – Digging holes
Opt for 45 mil EPDM liner instead of the standard 15 mil EPR, to account for turtles’ sharp claws. Added nesting area and bamboo to eventually provide camouflage for turtles.
Mar, 2021 – The Plan
Planning to dig an additional pond for turtles, and adding a bio filter circulating into a bog system, so it would produce food and minimize maintenance needs.
Oct, 2016 – First attempt
While the plants survived initially, it quickly turned downhill when the turtles decided to use the new systems as resting platforms.
