Watercress was choosen for its ability to tolerate shade and overwinter. It’s a fast-growing, nutritious superfood. Easy to forage (replace), delicious to eat, and only grows in clean water. Just by watching the growth of the plant, we can get an idea of the water quality.

Swirl filter is done! There are 3 pre & post filters, 2 bio filters, and 1 solids collector. They’ll help to provide nutrients, while boosting the oxygen level in the pond and clean toxics. Six types of plants were also introduced to the system to be tested.

Opt for 45 mil EPDM liner instead of the standard 15 mil EPR, to account for turtles’ sharp claws. Added nesting area and bamboo to eventually provide camouflage for turtles.

Planning to dig an additional pond for turtles, and adding a bio filter circulating into a bog system, so it would produce food and minimize maintenance needs.

While the plants survived initially, it quickly turned downhill when the turtles decided to use the new systems as resting platforms.
